How Sustainability Can be Positive For You

Gadgets in the office

We only have one planet, and it’s high time we started treating it right!

Perhaps it’s due to the fact we spend so much of our time swinging through the trees, being at one with mother nature, that sustainability is a cause close to our hearts. But we’re not alone – the green revolution is gathering momentum!

If you’ve been considering making some changes to the way you do business to make your practice more eco-friendly, bear in mind that sustainability isn’t just a positive for the planet – it can have a positive impact on your company, too! Here’s how sustainability can work for you…

Customers hate paper

Seriously, who even uses paper anymore?! Going paperless is not only good news for the trees, but it can save you time spent rooting around for documents – time that can be put to more efficient use elsewhere! Also, if you embrace the digital age and lean on tech that allows you to access everything you need in seconds and deal with documents electronically, you can bet your bottom dollar that your customers will appreciate it.

You’ll save some cash

Putting your efforts into an energy efficiency strategy is a sound investment for your business. While you may not want to put any money into low energy lighting or an energy efficient air conditioning system at first, chances are that when the energy savings begin to clock up, you’ll realise you’ve saved yourself a pretty penny! That’s money that can go towards much more important things like the odd team day out or staff rewards – everyone’s a winner!

Millennials love a good cause

If you’re looking to appeal to the lucrative millennial market with your products or services, or if you want to recruit some top millennial talent for your business, you need to make sure your company is an attractive proposition. Millennial workers can’t resist a company that makes a positive impact. Business Insider reported that this golden demographic is drawn to brands that reflect their deeply held personal values and make sustainability a key priority. Turn your reputation green and you’ll get the millennial vote as well as the planet’s!

It can bring your team together

Effective communication with your team is key to getting your green initiatives off the ground – why not construct a social media platform to help guide their green actions regarding water, fuel and other unnecessary waste? You could even create a scheme whereby employees score points for certain actions  –  a little bit of competition never hurt anyone!

By sharing great practice and committing to tackling sustainability as a team, you can work together to boost the energy efficiency of your workplace  – and we all know the tribe that works and plays together, stays together!

You can rest assured that here at Go Ape, sustainability is important to us

– our sites are located in some of the most beautiful natural environments the UK has to offer, so we make it our mission to take care of them! Book a team building day with us, and come see for yourself!

Top teamwork films to inspire your tribe!

Popcorn Movie
Popcorn at the ready!

Now, for all our differences and idiosyncrasies, there’s one thing that we all have in common: we all adore a good film!

Maybe you’re a horror fan who gets a buzz from being spooked. Or, maybe you prefer films that have you on the edge of your sofa from the off. Perhaps you enjoy marvelling at mega-glitzy blockbusters rammed with jaw-dropping special effects. Or, maybe you love nothing more than to spend Saturday nights curled up with bar of choccy and hugging a box of tissues, sobbing your heart out to a mushy, girl-meets-boy romcom.

Genres aside, every film makes us feel. Moving pictures have the potential to elicit every type of emotion from within us. We feel anger, pain, excitement, satisfaction, happiness…you name it, we can experience it.

Films can also teach us a thing or two. They can educate us and help us to learn about things like periods in history or cultures different from our own. And, they can also help teach tribes how to be better tribes!

Did someone say ‘Friday afternoon filmathon’?! We’ve picked some of our fave flicks that not only have great storylines, but will also inspire great teamwork among your tribe! Here they are…

Apollo 13

In this classic, a bunch of spacemen have to work together to solve an almost-impossible problem to guarantee their safe return to earth. There’s a good few lessons in leadership in Apollo 13, with Gene Krantz and Jim Lovell’s ability to control the chaos giving a huge confidence boost to the team on-board.

Remember the Titans

This film depicts the real-life tale of newly-appointed African-American coach as he struggles to unite his racially-integrated team. Through all their differences, they share the same goal: to win the state football championships. There’s tension, trials and tribulations in this movie, which delivers potent messages on trust, leadership, dedication and sacrifice.

Coach Carter

An equally inspiring film based on Richmond High School basketball coach Ken Carter. A dysfunctional team is united by their love of the sport, with each player yearning to be part of something bigger and better. As the plot unfurls, Carter’s the team goes from strength to strength, teaching us valuable lessons in discipline, courage and how to overcome adversity.

The Great Escape

A group of 250 men escape from a German prisoner of war camp in 1944, with success contingent on establishing individual roles among and working as a unit. Each person must come together to share their own knowledge and expertise in order to foil their captors and initiate an escape of epic proportions.

Cool Runnings

The message of this film? Nothing’s impossible when you work together as a team! Four Jamaican bobsledders dream of competing in the Winter Olympics, even though they’ve never set their eyes on snow. Cool Runnings is a tale of true determination, not to mention the ultimate feel-good flick!

What other films would you add to the list?

How Letting People Work From Home Benefits Your Business

Team meeting in the office

The remote working revolution is nigh and each year, more and more businesses make the decision to give their tribes the option of working from home.

If you’re yet to embrace this flexible way of working, then you’re already late to the party!

Whether it’s for one or several days a week, giving your tribe free rein of where they work has many benefits – and not just for your employees! Let’s take a look at some of the ways remote working can prove advantageous for your business:

Productivity boost

A Harvard Business Review study, which analysed the efficiency of staff working in a particular call centre, found that productivity jumped by a whopping 30% when they were offered the choice of working from home. And we all know what a boost to productivity means…a boost to your business’ bottom line! It might not suit everyone, but certain members of your tribe might feel like they’re less distracted at home than in the office (especially if they’re sat next to Linda the loud mouth).

Greater loyalty

Giving your tribe the option to work from home is like telling them – “I don’t need to see you to trust that you’ll do your job!” You’re also essentially letting your tribe customise their own work schedules and saving them the hassle of enduring the dreaded, daily commute. You’re helping them to strike that gloriously golden work/life balance, and you can be sure that they’ll express their gratitude through hardwork and loyalty.

Healthier, happier tribe

Sans the daily commute, employees who work from home find that they have more time to squeeze in some exercise, whether it’s a morning run or an evening bike ride to de-stress and reconnect with nature. Healthy tribe members are less likely to fall ill and take days off sick – they are also happier and more productive! A win-win…win?!

Cut down costs

There’s no doubt about it: having all staff centrally located in an office is expensive. There’s the cost of space, electricity, equipment and other things like free food and drink. Having staff work remotely can help to keep these costs to a minimum. At the same time, utilising tools like cloud hosting and communication platforms (think Skype and Huddle) means you won’t need to invest in in-house infrastructure such as servers, meaning more money saved!

It’s greener

Now more than ever, companies are being scrutinised for the steps they take to limit their impact on the environment. If you’re reducing the amount of electricity you use or ink cartridges you buy thanks to remote working, then great news: you’re shrinking your carbon footprint at the same time! Also, by allowing your tribe to work from home, you’re reducing the number of cars (with their nasty fumes) that are on our roads. Flexible working is a greener choice, for sure!

The World’s Coolest Offices

Team meeting in the office

Does your office feel more drab than fab? Do your surroundings leave you feeling more tired than inspired? Maybe you need an office shake up!

Our workspaces can have a huge impact on both our mental and physical health. A well-designed office has been linked to improved productivity, lowered stress levels and overall happier workers. After all, no one wants to work in a dull, colourless and dark space. It goes against our nature-loving nature!

A simple rearrange of desks, the introduction of a little greenery or some furry, four-legged friends are all foolproof ways to turn your office from glum to fun. But if you need a little inspiration – we’ve got you covered.

We all know that waking up early for work can be hard enough, but if our offices were anything like the ones we’re about to mention, we’d have no trouble rolling out of bed in the morning. So, without further ado, here are five of the world’s coolest offices (please excuse us while we pitch these ideas to our top banana…)

Selgas Cano Architecture Office

Straight out of a Go Ape dream, Selgas Cano Architecture Office is a vision of how a work/nature balance should be. The office belongs to a Spanish architectural firm, who set up their workspace in the heart of the forest. They didn’t just want to be surrounded by forest, though, they wanted to be within it – so they installed floor to ceiling windows that run the length of the building!

Unsurprisingly, this juggernaut of a company has a pretty enviable HQ. Found in San Francisco, the Airbnb head office has rooms inspired by places on the earth; there is a Mumbai café, a Rio de Janeiro living room and lots and lots of bright, open space.

Situated in a high-rise stretching above Bangkok, Thailand, this wooden wonder is home to a library, amphitheatre, indoor running tracks, tennis tables (just like here at Banana HQ) and a rooftop terrace that overlooks the city.

Innocent Smoothies

Any company that champions healthy eating and sustainability is a friend of ours, but their London office really takes the cake (or should we say, fruit cake?). There are unlimited smoothies for all staff, swishy AstroTurf floors and employees are encouraged to work in a different place each day so they can meet as many people as possible.

Did you really think we’d make it through a list of cool offices without mentioning the mother of them all? Google offices have slides, sleeping pods and you can have meetings in repurposed cable cars! Google has always been way ahead of the curve, but with everything from flexible working, free food and free sanitary items in every bathroom, they sure know how to look after staff.

Don’t worry if acquiring offices like these if off the menu, because there are smaller things you can do to boost morale. Office dogs have also been linked to happier staff, as they can lower stress, encourage communication between co-workers and create a welcoming, inclusive environment. Plus, who doesn’t want to spend their break cuddling a puppy!?

Personally, here at Banana HQ, we find that filling up any space with lovely, green plants gives us a boost – and not just because of how fresh it makes the air! Office-based greenery has been known to alleviate stress, heighten productivity, improve health and not to mention, they look lovely! Whether you opt for a succulent, spider plant or peace lily, giving your office a natural lift is good for your head and your heart.

Another stress-busting tactic is a spending time in the trees at Go Ape. Ditch the dreary office and opt for the trees instead! Spend the day Segwaying along the forest’s understory or up, up, up in the air as you whoosh down a zip wire! Exercise (and exhilarating heights) are known for their tension-ridding and team building ways, so why not swing by?
