If there’s one thing that’s guaranteed to get your tribe working like a well-oiled machine, it’s keeping them engaged. Effective employee engagement can make all the difference between a workforce that’s lacklustre, depressed and falling asleep into their banana pancakes; and one that’s energised, productive and working perfectly as a team.
We should know, we’ve had plenty of experience designing and developing team building days at Go Ape and we can tell when engagement is lacking as well as help you ignite it!
But it’s not just us who are a little obsessed with employee engagement, all manner of research bods have been analysing it for years. According to the Global Human Capital Trends 2015 report, 87% of organisations revealed their biggest challenge is culture and engagement, and research by Gallup suggests that only 13% of employees in the world are actually engaged.
That’s why we’ve broken the topic down into five core pillars that we believe come together to produce the ultimate, engaged workforce, now you can make sure that your tribe are one of the 13%.
1. Relationship with managers.
We believe many employees leave a company, not due to their job, but due to a poor or non-existent relationship with their boss. Offer coaching, feedback and opportunities to develop to show that you have respect for your tribe and you care about what they think and how they feel.
Swinging through the trees might be a great stress reliever for us at Go Ape, but do you afford your employees the same option? Highly stressed and overworked staff are most certainly not happy staff – offer support and activities to promote wellness such as a gym membership, healthy snacks or morale-boosting activities to give stress the heave-ho.
3. Personal growth.
Investing in training and career development helps to keep morale up and engagement on! Finding ways to empower employees, whether that means taking on added responsibilities, supporting them with side projects or helping create career goals they can aim for, will provide your tribe with a sense of purpose.
Slogging your guts out for an unappreciative audience is bound to make anyone’s engagement levels drop like a stone. Show your employees how their work contributes to the company’s aims and give praise, rewards and incentives when good work merits it.
5. Relationship with co-workers.
Whether you have a team-mate who’s inordinately shy or others who live out of town, there’s no doubt that a lack of camaraderie amongst teammates leads to a lack of engagement. By organising socials, team events and opportunities to collaborate and mix, you’ll help your team get to know one another better and work well together, too!
A team building day out at Go Ape can tick all these boxes in one. Not only does it give you a chance for you to bond with your employees and enjoy fun activities as a team, but a tree-swinging day out boosts morale and rewards the efforts they put into their work.
